Indigenous Healing and Wellness Strategy
A partnership between Indigenous peoples and the Government of Ontario, working together to promote health, healing, and wellness in First Nations communities across Ontario since 1994.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
A Commitment to Health and Healing
The Indigenous Healing and Wellness Strategy (IHWS) was established in 1994 through a unique partnership between Indigenous organizations and the Government of Ontario. Developed in response to the alarming conditions of poor health and family violence faced by Indigenous people in Ontario, IHWS represents a shared commitment to meaningful, lasting change.
The strategy combines traditional, culturally appropriate programs and services alongside mainstream programming to improve healing, health, and wellness — with a particular focus on reducing family violence and violence against Indigenous women and children.
